Where Cutting Fits in Primary Processing

A rotary cutter takes cased leaf and reduces it to cut rag at a set width, the raw material a maker's rod-forming unit actually runs. Get the cut width wrong or inconsistent, and every downstream stage inherits that variation, showing up as uneven rod density before you ever reach the packer.

Stem Flattening Before the Cut

Stems don't cut the same way leaf does. Run them through a rotary cutter unflattened and you get inconsistent pieces that blend unevenly with the rest of the rag. A stem flattener processes stem material first, so it blends uniformly with leaf once cut, which cuts down on leaf waste and keeps the finished blend consistent batch to batch.

Knife Count and Cut-Size Control

The Hauni KT-400 runs a five-knife rotary drum, with pneumatic cylinders driving the jaw action that feeds leaf into the blades. Cut size itself is set by a PLC drive on a brass bend slat, which holds the width steady across a run and lets an operator adjust it to spec rather than resetting mechanical stops by hand.

What to Check Before Buying a Tobacco Cutter

Knife count and condition. More knives generally means a finer, more consistent cut at the same drum speed. Check knife wear and how recently they were reground, not just the count.

Cut-size control method. A PLC-regulated system gives repeatable, adjustable cut width. Purely mechanical adjustment means more manual recalibration between blends.

Where it sits in your line. A cutter and a stem flattener solve different problems upstream of the same maker. Confirm which stage you're actually missing.
